Martindale Angus not new to breeding the best

Unless you are a Lilydale local, you may not have heard of Tasmania’s Martindale Angus.

Owned and operated by the Martin Family, principal Troy Martin has been in the cattle industry for 40 years and quietly breeding high quality Angus cattle for more than a decade on the families’ Lilydale property located in the lush Tamar Valley.

In a first for the stud, Martindale will now offer seven elite bulls at the Powranna TLX Complex following the Tamaroo Angus bull sale on Tuesday 22 March from 4.15pm.

Troy, along with his family, select the best available genetics the industry currently offers and utilize laser focused breeding programs based on the principle of continuous development of the genetic phenotype and genotype attributes of Angus cattle.  All breeding programs are committed to maternal excellence.

“We target all the Trans-Tasman Angus Cattle Evaluation criteria, starting with the fact we all need to get a live calf on the ground – so it is looking at calving ease, growth, fertility and temperament”, said Troy.

“In addition, all cattle must be free from all genetic conditions, I am very rigorous with that.  They must have carcass quality, be structurally sound and extremely fertile”.

Standout Angus bloodlines make up the foundation of the Martindale operation with sires Ardrossan Admiral A2, Ardrossan Equator A241, Pathfinder Genesis G357, Te Mania Emperor E343, and Cluden Newry Andy H113 genetics currently present across the herd.

Breed leading Australian sires Martindale used in recent joining’s include Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15 with his structural, phenotypic and pedigree excellence, brilliant balanced EBV set, along with Landfall New Ground N90 with his ground-breaking maternal pedigree and incredible EBV profile.

From the US, groundbreaking sires include GB Fireball 672, a bull with both calving ease and impressive meat quality data, Bubs Southern Charm AA31, a number three for registered progeny in America in 2020/2 along with Sterling Pacific 904, Top 1% on all growth traits, a bull who adds performance with maternal strength and Myers Fair-N-Square M39, built from maternal excellence and longevity, have been selected for their excellent traits.

The studs’ main objective in breeding animals with supreme genetics who produce elite beef cattle is verified with privately sold bulls now, producing cattle with exceptional meat quality for clients.

“I get to see plenty of client’s progeny on the ground and they always perform well, but to have the meat quality coming through is second to none.”

“Client feedback on the meat quality of their steers they received from JBS and Swifts Meat is that they are some of the best qualities up against Meat Standards Australia; and making over 840c/kg, you have to be quite chuffed with that’, he added.

“Those privately sold bulls progeny have been achieving good results at market, especially for carcass merit so we made the decision to offer those bloodlines to the wider market this year”, said Troy.

This genuine belief in the Martindale Angus program, and the future of the beef industry, has Troy excited about what’s to come.

“There is a genuine push to meet high standards, customer demands and provide superior Angus beef. In talking with other Tasmanian breeders, we are all very buoyant about the improvement in the overall quality of Angus cattle.”

Private inspections of the seven sale bulls are welcome prior to sale and from 10am sale day at Powranna TLX Complex.

Giving clients old and new the opportunity to compete for the best sires Martindale Angus have to offer, the seven 18-month bulls will also be available to bid simultaneously online with AuctionsPlus.
