Martindale Angus finds it’s X factor

Putting themselves on the map in Tasmania’s autumn bull sales circuit this year, upcoming Lilydale stud, Martindale Angus garnered attention for all the right reasons.

A full clearance of the seven 18-month bulls offered at the Powranna Selling Complex, March 22nd, with a top price of an impressive $10,000 for Lot 3, Martindale MyMate R7 meant the studs focus on its elite style of genetics hit the right note with beef producers.

Differentiating itself from other producers in the region, stud principal Troy Martin said, “We begin with the end in mind when it comes to breeding and endeavour to achieve world’s best practice in all matters of our cattle production and environmental considerations”.

Mr Martin added, “it could be argued that all cattle producers are endeavouring to do the same thing, thus, there are no tangible differences”.

“We think a little differently and are constantly looking at what a future Angus Cattle herd will look like”, Mr Martin said.

“What are the future requirements? What does the stud need to do now to influence for the future?  Is it because Martindale Angus produce in one of the world’s best food destinations?”

These are the types of questions that drive all the Martindale families’ breeding decisions.

Based on nearly 20 years in the industry both in Queensland, and now with the family run Lilydale property the stud has well-established credentials in breeding elite cattle with a core goal for its founding breeding principles, “to produce elite genetics delivering supreme Angus beef”, said Mr Martin

As breeders looking to stand out from other Angus studs Martindale Angus believes it has found its X Factor with its unique genetic combination & selection choice of the Sire, Dam and resultant progeny.

This can be demonstrated in the use of US sire, Bubs Southern Charm AA3 along with other leading industry sires, including genetics from the world’s most expensive Angus Sires, SAV America 8018.

Bubs Southern Charm AA31 was a powerful and easy-fleshing sire with a phenomenal fertility level, ranked third amongst active sires for progeny registered for the second consecutive year in 2020 and 2021 after debuting among the top 25 sires in the 2019 fiscal year of the American Angus Association.

He had an impeccable phenotype, descends from a line of females with quality udder structure and a high level of fertility that have a slick hair coat, good feet, ease of fleshing, fescue tolerance and the females that produced him are very efficient cattle.

Bubs Southern Charm AA31 is now-deceased, access to these superior genetics is all but exhausted in Australia.

With only 109 currently registered progenies in Australia, Martindale Angus has the only two progenies, registered in Tasmania.

“We are pretty excited about this”, said Mr Martin.  “This is a real portrayal of a genuine difference from other producers, and our Martindale X Factor”

Artificial Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transfer (ET) programs feature heavily in the studs breeding program, and while these are not new to the cattle industry, they have become somewhat foundational for many cattle producers.

Influences of industry, business objectives and outcomes, history, advancements in research and development (R&D), the guiding principles and fundamentals of basic information gathering or problem solving, the five W’s (who, what, where, when and why) and the one how, are some of the reasons cattle producers opt out, substitute, or compliment the more traditional or conventional cattle producing methods.

Enduring research and development are foundational and fundamental to the rigorous selection processes in the determination of proven and promising elite sires from throughout the world.

This ultimately culminates in laser focused breeding programmes founded on world’s best practice, and the principle of continuous development of the genetic phenotype & genotype attributes of Angus cattle.

Mr Martin added the culmination of using superior genetics, and breeding strategies, has potentially given rise to two promising young Angus sires, Martindale Monolith S7 (TKM21S7) and Martindale Masterclass S8 (TKM21S8) who was weaned at the start of August, weighing in at 475kg (1047lbs) at just over 8 months of age.

“We are thrilled with how these bulls are progressing”.

Describing the young bulls as “exceptionally appealing” Mr Martin said their phenotype development is best described as extraordinary and is only surpassed by their incredibly quiet temperament and sociability.

“Only time will reveal the unique attributes of these promising young Tasmanian sires”.

Martindale Angus X Factor is set to continue with the inclusion of genetics from the World’s most expensive Angus Sire, SAV America 8018 which sold for $1,887,500 US, into the studs’ future breeding programmes.

SAV America shattered every record at Schaff Angus Valley including the all-time record of 1107 pounds (502kg) 205-day weight and America 8018 is touted to be one-of-a-kind bull.

Proven elite Angus bloodlines from Australian, include Ardrossan Equator A241, Pathfinder Genesis G357, Te Mania Emperor E343, Clunes Crossing Dusty M13, Millah Murrah Paratrooper P15, Landfall New Ground N90 to name but a few will be the foundation genetics for the Martindale Angus Dams.

Supercharged ground-breaking sires such as Baldridge Beast Mode B074, GB Fireball 672, Bubs Southern Charm AA31, Sterling Pacific 904, Myers Fair-N-Square M39 and SAV America 8018 will formulate future Martindale elite genetics.

Another unique difference between producers is our incredible location. Tourism in the region continues to soar with Launceston taking out the 2022 Aussie Town of the Year Award.

Launceston also recently won the UNESCO City of Gastronomy title, globally recognising the city as one of the world’s best food destinations.  The region of northern Tasmania is home to hundreds of agricultural producers and dozens of vineyards boasting world class restaurants and wineries.

Martindale Angus is located in this food hub, 28km north- east of Launceston in the picturesque Tamar Valley. It is a short drive from the quaint village of Lilydale, at the foothills of Mount Arthur.

What’s not different between producers is the true belief in the future of the beef industry in Tasmania.

There is a genuine motivation among Tasmanian Angus beef producers to showcase their beef on the world stage. Now is the time!

Martindale Angus continues in the pursuit of perfection and elite genetics delivering supreme Angus beef.
